Lucie Stern Apartment

The "Lucie Stern Apartment" has been a meeting room used by Troop 57 for many years. As part of the Pacific Skyline Council's Palo Alto Service Center, it is also available to the Council's other units as well as the Lucie Stern Community Center. After many years of service, it was time to refurbish the "Apartment". The following dedication and attached pdf/iPhoto Album recounts the process.

Lucie Stern Apartment

Refurbished - May 2009

Construction on the Lucie Stern Community Center began in 1933. The complex, designed by Palo Alto's famed architect, Birge Clark, was built in six stages. The original plans called for three parts - the Community Theatre, the Ruth Stern Wing and the Children's Theatre/Scout Hall Wing. Lucie later added the Boy Scout Fire Circle, the Children's Library, and the walls and gates to the Secret Garden. The Ruth Stern Wing housed a reception area, a main ballroom, offices and a novel feature - an APARTMENT at the North end. The "Apartment" originally housed the Center's caretaker-hostess. When the position was eliminated, Lucie requested that the Stanford Area Boy Scout Council have the use of this space as their Council Headquarters Office. The City Council agreed.

For nearly seventy years, the Apartment has served as Council Headquarters and later as a scout conference/meeting room. After years of service, the Apartment was in dire need of repairs. The refurbishment included new carpet, paint, doors, display case, window shades, tables, chairs, a historic newspaper clippings and photo display and new ceiling lighting. Funding was provided by a Northwestern Mutual Foundation Community Service Award presented in honor of Larry Christenson, a Financial Representative, for his service to Troop 57 and the Pacific Skyline Council. Additional funding was provided in partnership with Troop 57 and the City of Palo Alto.
