Why Join The Order of The Arrow?
The Order of the Arrow is the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America, dedicated to recognizing Scouts and adult leaders who exemplify the Scout Oath and Law through service, leadership, and commitment to others. Founded in 1915, the organization emphasizes cheerful service and personal growth through utilizing outdoor skills, encouraging members to lead by example within their communities. The Order of the Arrow provides opportunities beyond the usual activities of the troop, offering a unique selection of service projects, leadership development, and other outings.
How to Join The Order of The Arrow?
To join the Order of the Arrow, a Scout must fulfill several eligibility requirements, be elected by their peers, then participate in an ordeal.
The eligibility requirements are as follows:
- Be a registered member of a Boy Scout troop and be at least First Class rank
- Have experienced 15 nights of camping as a registered member of a Boy Scout troop within two years immediately prior to the date of the election. Only 5 nights of camping are rewarded for long-term camps. 10 nights of camping are derived from outings which are at or under three nights.
- Under the age of 21
The Ordeal is the first induction experience into the Order of the Arrow and is intended for reflection, service, and personal challenge. During the Ordeal, candidates spend time performing service projects that benefit the camp or Scouting community, emphasizing the OA principle of cheerful service. The experience also includes moments of silence and self-reflection for contemplating the Scout Oath and Law and how they can better serve others.
Brotherhood membership is the second induction experience for the Order of the Arrow. It represents a better understanding of the organization’s purpose and more dedication to service and leadership. Becoming a member of the Brotherhood requires activity in their lodge. The Brotherhood process includes learning more about the history, traditions, and principles of the Order of the Arrow.
The Vigil Honor is the highest recognition in the Order of the Arrow, given to members who have shown outstanding service and leadership over many years. It is awarded by the lodge, not applied for, and recognizes continued selfless dedication to Scouting and others.
